Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear Closing Statement of the Day: Jon Stewart takes aim at “the country’s 24-hour-politico-pundit-perpetual-panic-conflictinator” (AKA the press) during the only serious/sincere — and only worthwhile, IMO — portion of today’s Rally to Restore Sanity.
Money: “We live now in hard times, not end times.”

Dear Jon Stewart,
This past weekend I crazily went to Washington DC for your and Stephen’s March to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. Aside from the fact that I deeply respect the both of you, I also had a crapton of midterms and papers these past three weeks and I desperately needed to get away from Berkeley.
I know you’re mainly just seen as a comedian and the face of The Daily Show, but your closing speech to the rally was unexpectedly one of the most inspirational things I’ve heard for as long as I can remember. To be honest, I’d been progressively growing more cynical that this country, with the corporations that seem to run it and the dunces that stubbornly won’t let go of their ideology, had completely lost what it really should be standing for.
But seeing all those people there, people who seem to care about country and the people who live in this country, whether they’re Muslim, gay, or anything else, it reminded me not to give up so easily, no matter how hard times may be.
Later that night, while I was walking around for hours and seeing everything from the Lincoln Memorial to the outskirts of Georgetown, I realized that I wasn’t bitterly viewing them with an eye for the mistakes that we’ve made in the past like I’d done before. I’d almost forgotten what it was like to have this small thing called hope and the realization that we can change for the better, no matter how big or small the difference we make is, but I think I’m beginning to feel it again.
Thank you for not giving up.
- Iris
